AdBlue / Flüssigdünger

Efficient and legally compliant tank solutions for AdBlue and liquid fertilisers with FENOTEC leak protection linings

AdBlue: a key to cleaner diesel engines

AdBlue is a clear, non-toxic liquid consisting of high-purity urea and demineralised water containing 32.5% urea. It is crucial for reducing harmful nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions from diesel engines through a process called Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR). By injecting AdBlue into the exhaust gases, NOx is converted into harmless nitrogen and water vapour, significantly reducing air pollution.

The growing importance of AdBlue

Due to strict environmental regulations, AdBlue has become essential for diesel vehicles to fulfil global emission standards such as Euro IV, V and VI. These standards aim to improve air quality and public health by minimising pollutant emissions. As the demand for AdBlue increases, facilities such as petrol stations are expanding their storage capacity to meet this need. Retrofitting existing tanks with internal tank covers, such as those offered by FENOTEC, is an effective solution.

Challenges in the storage of AdBlue

AdBlue is particularly sensitive to temperature: it freezes at temperatures below -11 °C and can decompose at temperatures above 30 °C. Temperature-controlled storage solutions are therefore essential. In regions with extreme weather conditions, both passive and active temperature control systems may be necessary to keep the temperature constant. For example, temperature-controlled warehouses or heated tanks may be required in such areas to prevent the AdBlue from freezing or overheating and to ensure its quality.

Material compatibility is a decisive factor in the storage of AdBlue. It is important that the materials used are carefully selected to prevent chemical reactions. Materials such as FENOSAFE BLUE are ideal for storing AdBlue as they do not react chemically with the solution. In contrast, materials such as ordinary steel or copper should be avoided. These can react with AdBlue, which changes the chemical composition of the solution and can damage both the solution itself and the containers. The choice of suitable materials ensures that the quality and effectiveness of AdBlue is maintained.

FENOSAFE BLUE: Customised for AdBlue and liquid fertilisers

The FENOSAFE BLUE tank liners, specially developed for use with AdBlue and liquid fertilisers, are designed to overcome these storage challenges. Manufactured from materials that are compatible with the chemical properties of AdBlue, such as certain plastics and stainless steel, they prevent corrosion and ensure longevity.

Legal compliance and innovative unmanned installation

These tank linings are certified by the German Institute for Building Technology (DIBt) under the approval number Z-65.30-487 and fulfil all German legal requirements of the Water Resources Act. FENOTEC’s patented unmanned installation system with fleece sewn in one piece at the factory ensures fast installation. Even if the vacuum in the cavity should ever drop (e.g. when transporting the tank), the inner shell and fleece can always be inflated together again.

The combination of increasing AdBlue consumption due to environmental regulations and the need for efficient storage solutions emphasises the importance of advanced products such as FENOSAFE BLUE tank linings. Not only do they protect tanks from the aggressive nature of AHL and the stringent storage requirements of AdBlue, but they also ensure compliance with environmental standards. For facilities upgrading existing storage capacity or creating new storage facilities, FENOTEC offers a reliable and legally compliant solution.
